The management at this organization listens to the front line staff and goes to great lengths to ensure that all members of the staff are treated very well. Throughout my career, I have made a difference in the lives of the individuals that I have worked with. I am there for each individual, to listen, to acknowledge their needs and wants, and to help improve their quality of life.

I was attracted to a career in community disability services because the care given to clients involves the entire spectrum of the life experience…. Through my own work, I have helped clients to achieve paid employment and to enjoy leisure activities. I have also advocated for their rights and for equality in their communities. I enjoy all aspects of being a Community Disability Services Practitioner.

Employees are an excellent resource when seeking applicants. They understand the position’s roles and responsibilities and will often recommend individuals that share similar values. The Employee Referral Incentive Program was initiated to encourage employees to refer potential candidates for existing position vacancies. The incentive rewards employees for assisting in recruiting qualified applicants for vacant positions. This is an effective method of recruiting applicants because it is timely and requires fewer resources.

The way this strategy works is there are two incentives the employee can receive. The employee receives the first incentive if the referred applicant is successfully recruited. If the referred applicant remains employed for a full three month probation period, the second incentive is granted to the employee.

Learning opportunities

We base one of our recruitment strategies on our value of lifelong learning. We promote opportunities for employees to participate in training and skills development. This includes technical skills training, relevant training (that is matched with the employees interest/needs) and the opportunity to attend conferences.

Increasing exposure

We have and will continue to seek out opportunities to increase our exposure to potential employees who are or may consider this work in the future. We accomplish this by attending career fairs, resource fairs, presenting to post-secondary students, meeting with career counselors, and posting employment opportunities with a variety of sources, and by offering practicum and co-op/summer work placements.

We consider students as a valuable resource, and we engage students in meaningful work. Over the past few years, we have engaged a number of students from a variety of programs to complete their co-op placements with us (e.g., management, technology, non-profit) and we often have a number of practicum students during the fall/winter sessions (i.e., social work, disability studies, psychology).
