Exemplary workplaces, or “employers of choice” are settings that are able to attract and engage the most desirable and talented workers in their industry. Research into the human resource practices of Community Disability Service Providers in the Calgary region suggests that most employers use a number of strategies simultaneously in their efforts to recruit and retain a qualified workforce. These strategies are similar to those identified in the literature for employers of choice.

I had previously done some volunteer work with children and adults who had physical and intellectual disabilities and I really enjoyed spending time with them. When I came to a “fork in the road” moment, I decided to abandon the oil patch and turn instead to a career in the field of disability services.
