Recruitment Practices

I started working with this agency providing relief for front line staff while I was completing my education in Community Rehabilitation Services. In my career, I am offered new positions which provide me with opportunities to work with a wide range of individuals. What do I like about working in the Community Disability Services sector? Everything!

Employee Referral Program

We encourage current employees to assist us in recruiting new staff members. Employees are rewarded if individuals they refer are hired and remain employed with the agency for at least six months. We promote this program through posters within the agency and through referral cards distributed by staff. A referral card brought to an interview by a new applicant links that applicant to the staff member responsible for the referral. We find these cards help to promote our agency and the Community Disability Services sector as well.

We are increasingly receiving more referral cards from new applicants. Recruiting employees using this team approach is proving to be very beneficial to the agency.

Human Resource Strategies

We have a team within Human Resources that meets monthly to brainstorm effective means of attracting qualified employees. By reviewing recruitment activity in the previous month and determining the needs of the organization at present, members of the team develop strategies to allocate resources in order to achieve the greatest results. These meetings assist us in identifying needs, evaluating current trends, and in determining future directions.

These meetings have enabled the HR team and the agency as a whole to maintain a consistent and continuous process focusing on our recruitment needs. This team approach to recruitment is working well.

Learning Opportunities in Challenging Behaviour and Mental Health

We offer opportunities for continuous learning. Our Psychology team and Staff Development Committee offer workshops covering topics such as dual diagnosis, autism, dealing with challenging behaviour, depression and suicide, personality disorders, etc. We also invite experts from outside our organization to present on these topics.

Feedback provided through staff surveys and in conversation indicates many of our qualified employees wish to work here because they are able to continue to learn and develop further expertise.
